St. Lawrence-in-the-Square, Winchester Gatehouse Church St. Lawrence's was originally a Saxon church guarding the main entrance to the Episcopal precinct. It was swallowed up in William the Conqueror's expansion of the Royal Palace, adjoining the Cathedral, and became the Chapel Royal of the Norman Kings of England. The present building is largely 15th century, but there is also a little work from previous centuries. It is usually open for public inspection.
