Saxons and Britons mostly lived in very similar houses. There were only small differences. Just like today, people in the Dark Ages lived in big or small houses according to how rich they were:

• Ordinary Saxon people lived on farms in small villages.
• Saxon merchants and workers often lived in towns.
• Rich lords or kings lived in big 'halls'.
